Philosophy

In developing a new or upgraded interchange, it is necessary to first define an optimal passenger solution and then to develop an implementation strategy, which proceeds in cost-effective steps. Thus the Consultancy puts the passenger first but is very aware that every penny spent has to be justified. However, we believe it necessary to demonstrate the early gains. Thus signage, travel information and improved security and environment in the waiting, booking and retail areas should be examined at an early stage to see if such gains can be realised quickly.

In the longer term it is seen as desirable to move towards zero step height, the minimisation of vertical movement and where necessary, to provide escalators, lifts and shallow ramps. Walk distances should be minimised and where there are dense passenger flows, travelators should be considered.

To ensure a better environment, it is suggested that shelter is provided for pedestrian movement both within and on the approaches to the interchange. In addition, pedestrian routing to the interchange should be better planned and signed. Open platforms can be wet, draughty and thoroughly unpleasant, enclosing them is extremely expensive; thus it may be preferable to have central circulation areas from which passengers emerge a few minutes before train arrival. Such areas would contain booking, catering, retail, waiting and toilet facilities.

Our approach ensures that the designs are constructable, that they take account of railway practices and incorporate a cost effective possession strategy. We have also found that if we involve all the relevant stakeholders in the planning, design and construction process, we deliver a better solution, faster.
